INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE OF PLAIN LINE

COURSE AIMS

This course is intended to provide a delegate with the relevant skills and underpinning knowledge to inspect and maintain Plain Line Track to the required Network Rail Company Standards.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this course the delegates will: -

• Have a clear understanding of track construction and components of plain line track
• Be able to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the inspection and maintenance of the following: -
• Earthworks
• Track formation
• Track drainage
• Line and level
• Understand the need and methods of formation treatment
• Have a clear understanding of and the relevant precautionary measures to prevent:-

Joint and rail failures
Track buckles
Rail Creep

• Have a basic understanding of plain line welding
• Be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of track inspection and reporting procedures
• Have a sound understanding of the theory and maintenance of continuous welded rail
• Be aware of Network Rail Standards relating to plain line maintenance

COURSE DURATION

Five days, Monday – Friday.

PRE-REQUISITES

There are no particular educational or competence pre-requisites for the course. However, the following factors will be of significant benefit to the delegate: -

• Prior experience of working within the Permanent Way environment
• Have a basic understanding of the track and its components

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

This course requires the delegate to be on or near the running line, therefore, he/she MUST be in possession of: -

• Valid P. T. S. Certificate
• Protective Clothing – high visibility
• Safety Footwear

The protective equipment must comply with current safety standards.

CERTIFICATION

A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to the delegate on completion of the course.
