THE TRACK CHARGEMAN

COURSE AIMS

This course is intended to provide delegates with the in-depth skills and knowledge to perform the duties of a Track Chargeman in the Inspection and Maintenance of the Permanent Way.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this course the delegates will: -

• Have a clear understanding of track construction and components of plain line and S&C.
• Be able to demonstrate in depth knowledge of the inspection and maintenance of :-
• Earthworks, Formation and Drainage
• Continuous Welded Rail
• Switch and Crossings
• Top and Line
• Clearances
• Rail Joints
• Switch Lever Boxes
•Curves and Cants
• Be able to identify and correct track alignment faults.
• Have a clear understanding of the precautions to take prior to and during extreme weather.
• Have a comprehensive knowledge of all relevant hand tools and equipment necessary to maintain the Permanent Way.
• Have a clear understanding in the methods of mechanised maintenance of the track.
• Be able to demonstrate a clear understanding in the method of setting out for lifting of S&C.
• Be able to correctly identify, order and store materials as required.
• Have an appreciation of track recording methods and the data provided.
• Have a sound understanding of the reasons for, and methods of, stressing CWR.
• Have an appreciation of the raising and removal of ESR`S and TSR’s.
• Be able to identify and implement the requirements and responsibilities for off-track work.
• Have a sound understanding of signalling and track circuitry and be able to identify and apply precautions necessary when carrying out track maintenance.
• Have a clear understanding of track condition and the risk of derailment.
• Have a sound understanding of the risk and safety precautions when working on electrified lines.
• Have an understanding of the communication skills required to be effectively manage personnel.

COURSE DURATION

Ten days, consisting of two five day modules, Monday – Friday.

PRE-REQUISITES

There are no particular educational or competence pre-requisites for the course. However, the following factors will benefit the delegate: -

• Prior in-depth experience of working on the maintenance of the Permanent Way.
• Be aware of the Railway Group Standards and Network Rail Company Standards.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

This course requires the delegate to be on or near the running line, therefore, he/she MUST be in possession of: -

• Valid P. T. S. Certificate
• Protective Clothing – high visibility
• Safety Footwear

The protective equipment must comply with current safety standards.

CERTIFICATION

A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to the delegate on completion of the course.
