EFFECTIVE MENTORING AND COACHING SKILLS

INTRODUCTION

Mentoring and coaching are increasingly recognised as vital components in the development of personnel within the rail industry. To be effective, mentors need to support their technical experience with the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary for carrying out their mentor roles and to identify when it is appropriate to coach and when to mentor. This course will provide the new mentor with these essential requirements and allow the mentor to relate them to current industry requirements.

COURSE AIMS

To provide delegates with the level of knowledge and skills to support learners by mentoring and coaching in the workplace.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

On successful completion of the course, delegates will be able to:
• Define the difference between coaching and mentoring
• Explain the benefits of Mentoring and coaching
• Agree the nature of mentoring and coaching in the workplace
• Create an appropriate environment for mentoring and coaching to take place
• Give trainees information, advice and guidance
• Identify and provide resources and facilities for mentoring and coaching
• Give trainees encouragement and support
• Comply with industry requirements for mentoring track safety personnel

Delegate participation, practical exercises, discussions, syndicate work and role play.

PRE-REQUISITES

This course involves a high degree of documentation review and candidates should be familiar with their own company procedures on Competence Management.

DELEGATES

This course is aimed primarily at qualified assessors and internal verifiers.

CERTIFICATION

A certificate of attendance will be issued to delegates who successfully complete the course.
Delegates may be able to work towards Employment NTO Unit L12: Coach individual learners and L14: Support learners by mentoring in the workplace
