GRINDING OPERATIVE

COURSE AIMS

The course is intended to provide the delegate with the knowledge and skills required to be competent to carry out the duties of a Grinding Operative.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this course the delegates will: -
• Have a clear understanding of the duties of a Grinding Operative.
• Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the requirements of Abrasive Wheels for each Grinding Machine
• Be able to identify the effects of Rolling Contact Fatigue in both Plain Line and Switch & Crossings
• Be able to demonstrate competency in the safety aspects and use of each grinding machine including: -
• Head grinder
• Switch deburrer
• Hand held angle grinder
• Be able to use relevant track gauges
• Have an understanding of the Non- Destructive Testing Procedures

COURSE DURATION

Four Days with one day assessment.

PRE-REQUISITES

• There are no particular educational or competence pre-requisites for the course. However, the following factors will be of significant benefit to the delegate: -
• Prior experience in working within the Permanent Way Environment
• A basic knowledge of the track and its components

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

This course requires the delegate to be on or near the running line, therefore, he/she MUST be in possession of: -
• Valid P. T. S. Certificate
• Protective Clothing – high visibility
• Safety Footwear
• Safety Helmet
• Flame retardant trousers
• Eye Protection
• Anti-Vibration Gloves
The protective equipment must comply with current safety standards.

CERTIFICATION

A Certificate of Competence will be awarded to the delegate on completion of the course and assessment.
