This course is intended to provide the delegate with an in-depth knowledge and skills required to plan, supervise and implement permanent way track renewals.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course the delegates will: -

  • Be aware of the need for site safety
  • Have a clear understanding of the method statement process
  • Have an understanding of the requirements of site planning
  • Be aware of the Railway Group Standards and Network Rail Company Standards and specifications relevant to track renewals
  • Have an understanding of the role of the Renewals Supervisory Manager
  • Have a clear understanding of the requirements for planning and organising resources, including labour, plant and materials
  • Have a clear understanding for the need of planning and implementation of possessions and isolation’s
  • Be able to estimate and order all relevant materials
  • Be able to prepare and employ bar charts
  • Have an understanding of the relevant “follow-up” work subsequent to track renewals
  • Have an in-depth knowledge of track construction, both plain line and S&C
  • Be aware of the interface between S&C and track signalling

    • Course Duration

    Eight days, consisting of two modules of four days, Monday – Thursday

    Pre-requisites

    There are no particular educational or competence pre-requisites for the course. However, the following factors will benefit the delegate: -

  • Prior supervisory or technical experience in working on the renewal of the Permanent Way
  • Good numeric skills.

    • Personal Protective Equipment

    This course requires the delegate to be on or near the running line and therefore, he/she MUST be in possession of:-

  • Valid P. T. S. Card
  • Protective “all orange” High Visibility Clothing to BS EN 471:2003
  • Safety Footwear to BS EN ISO 20345:2004
  • Safety Helmet (white/blue) to BS EN 397:1995
  • Safety Glasses to BS EN 166 and of Optical Class 1 with Impact Resistance F

    • Certification

    The delegate will be required to complete an examination to demonstrate his/her underpinning knowledge of the requirements of track renewals.
