Course Aims

This course is intended to provide delegates with the knowledge and understanding of health and safety issues when operating machinery. They will have the ability to carry out safe working practices according to CPCS criteria and standards.
All training and assessments will be carried out by a registered CPCS instructor.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course the delegates will: -

  • Have a basic knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act 74.
  • Have an understanding of (PUWER 98) and (LOLER 98).
  • Be able to comply with the manufacturers specifications.
  • Know the operator responsibilities with regard to maintenance duties.
  • Have an understanding of the relevant safe working practices.
  • Be able to carry out running checks.
  • Have knowledge of travelling up and down an incline according to manufacturers specifications.
  • Be able to excavate a straight trench with a uniform bottom and a manhole at the end.
  • Have the ability to demonstrate trenching in layers and produce short and efficient working cycle.
  • Have the ability to position and load a dumper efficiently.
  • Be able to back fill trench and re-instate to original ground conditions
  • Be able to change different types of buckets using the quick hitch attachment (Manual type, semi automatic and automatic types).
  • Be able to carry out the shut down procedure and park safely.
  • Course Duration

  • Experienced operators require a 1 day assessment refresher
  • Novice operators under 10 tonnes require 5 days training, including a 1 day theory session.
  • Excavator above 10 Tonnes will require 10 days training including 2 days theory
  • Pre-Requisites

    Experienced workers must bring proof of certification with a letter from their employer confirming their experience.

    Plant & Machinery Requirements

  • Fully serviceable excavator complying with the manufacturers specifications.
  • Ramps to carry out incline procedure.
  • A safe working area with a minimum 12 metre length to excavate a trench.
  • A vehicle to load and take a minimum of 6 full buckets.
  • A construction bucket and a ditching bucket
  • Personal Protective Equipment

    This course requires the delegate to be on or near the running line, therefore he/she MUST be in possession of: -

  • Protective “all orange” High Visibility clothing to BS EN 471:2003
  • Safety Footwear to BS EN ISO 20345:2004
  • Safety Helmet (white/blue) to BS EN 397:1995
  • Ear Protection
  • Eye Protection
  • General Purpose Gloves to BS EN388:2121
  • The protective equipment must comply with current safety standards.

    Certification

    A Certificate of Competence will be awarded to the delegate upon successful completion of both an underpinning knowledge theory assessment and practical on-site assessment.
