TR25 Undertake Manual Rail Grinding - Conversion

Course Aims

This course is designed to train persons who are responsible for undertaking Manual Hand Grinding as part of their duties on Network Rail infrastructure and currently hold the TR80 certification. It is designed to develop a person's knowledge, understanding and skills and is therefore particuarly suited to persons required to prove their capability in these areas.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course the delegates will: -

  • Identify the scope of required work based on information available in relevant NR documents and databases
  • Ensure all activities are completed in compliance with relevant NR personnel and site safety requirements
  • Complete the pre-work inspection of the site to confirm the condition of the asset and determine any factors that may impact on the planned grinding work
  • Plan the detailed grinding activities and prepare the required tools, equipment and materials, in accordance with any specific Work Order and pre-work inspection results
  • Complete the detailed examination of the site and asset before commencing the grinding activity, in order to confirm the exact scope of work and identify any limitations
  • Complete grinding activities on all track asset and defect types, to the requirement of relevant NR standards and the asset's defined profile tolerances
  • Complete post-work inspection of the asset to confirm that the completed work is compliant with the relevant NR standards and the asset's defined profile tolerances
  • Confirm the completion of required work and hand the track asset back into use, following the specific NR processes and procedures
  • Complete and file all the required documentation for each completed Work Order

Pre Requisite Requirements

The following pre-requisites are required:

  • Must be a minimum age of 18
  • Must hold the relevant medical level 1, 2, 3 or 4
  • Must meet the requirements of Network Rail Standard NR/L1/OHS/051 (Drugs and Alcohol)
  • Interim Manual Rail Grinding of Plain Line, Switches & Crossings TR80
  • Personal Track Safety PTS
  • Manual Handling
  • Track Induction TR00
  • Rail Mounted Switch Grinder PTMP 03.02 or alternative industry approved equivalent course
  • Plain Line Grinder PTMP 03.03 or alternative industry approved equivalent course
  • Crossing Grinder PTMP 03.04 or alternative industry approved equivalent course
  • Cutting and Grinding PTMP 03.06 or alternative industry approved equivalent course
  • Liquid Penetrant Testing LPT
  • Magnetic Particle Testing MPT

PPE Requirements

This course requires the delegate to be on or near the running line and therefore, they MUST be in possession of:-

  • Valid P. T. S. Card
  • High Visibility Flame Retardant Coverall to EN531, EN470 and GO/RT3279
  • Safety Footwear to BS EN ISO 15090 H13 C1 AN-F2A-PPE 3aCAT
  • Safety Helmet (white/blue) to BS EN 397
  • Anti-Vibration Gloves
  • Ear protection to EN352
  • Safety Glasses BS EN 166 and of Optical Class 1 with Impact Resistance B

Respiratory Personal Equipment (RPE) Requirements

  • A half or full-face respirator with gas/vapour filters, rated at FFP3 shall be worn by all delegates
  • Disposable paper masks are permitted, provided that they comply with EN14387 and hold the FFP3 rating
  • Half-face respirators with attachable gas/vapour filters are also permitted, but they must comply with EN14387 and hold the FFP3 rating

A powered air-fed mask is the preferred option for RPE, as it provides the greatest protection and comfort. Delegates must ensure that the filters are the correct type.

NOTE: Where facial hair (including stubble) obstructs any part of the mask's seal, delegates shall either remove the facial hair or alternatively, wear a full-face air-fed mask.

Delegates who present to the training event without sufficient PPE/RPE will be turned away.

This is in line with recent guidance from Network Rail regarding the correct types of RPE to be worn by individuals sporting facial hair

The protective equipment must comply with current safety standards.

Certification

On successfully completing the assessment, they will be awarded full Tr 25 competency (level 3) in Sentinel for a further 36 months.

For Non-Network Rail holders, an interim assessment between 15-18 months is required to maintain competence for the full 36-month competence lifecycle.

If attendees of the Conversion course do not successfully pass the end-of-training assessment, they will be required to complete the ten-day Initial training and complete action learning.
